California State Parks Encourages All to Celebrate Earth Day

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— Celebrate Earth Day this month with California State Parks at any of the 280 unique park units across the state. State Parks has numerous Earth Day-themed events planned. They include in-person activities such as guided walks and hikes, workdays, and a bioblitz, as well as virtual programming with a live dive broadcast exploring the hidden world of the ocean.

‘The Orphans’ at Calaveras Big Trees State Park Are Alive and No Longer Stand Alone

ARNOLD, Calif.— California State Parks today announced that the two monarch giant sequoias known as “The Orphans” at Calaveras Big Trees State Park are alive and no longer stand alone. The sequoias were damaged during a prescribed burn in the park’s North Grove area last fall. Several scientists visited The Orphans on Thursday, October 5, and observed that they are alive and thousands of giant sequoia seedlings now surround them.

California State Parks and CAL FIRE Plan Prescribed Burn at Calaveras Big Trees State Park

ARNOLD, Calif.— California State Parks plans to conduct a prescribed burn in Calaveras Big Trees State Park with assistance from CAL FIRE, US Forest Service, and National Park Service. The treatment will cover approximately 1,300-acres in the South Grove area. Work may begin as soon as October 30. All burning depends on weather and air quality conditions; if weather or vegetation conditions are not conducive for burning and smoke dispersal, the department will reschedule the treatment.

ARNOLD, Calif. — California State Parks in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry and Fire protection (CAL FIRE) plan to conduct a prescribed burn Thursday, November 12, 2020, in Calaveras Big Trees State Park. This burn is part of the series of prescription burns planned for the park this year and will be dependent on weather conditions and resources.
