Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Will Be Closed to Visitors Starting Sept. 22

The temporary closure will allow next phase of major improvement project to move forward
SAN DIEGO — California State Parks will temporarily close Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve (SNR) to visitors beginning Tuesday, Sept. 22, to allow for major improvements. The closure is part of the next phase of an ongoing multiyear improvement project to upgrade utilities, replace an old restroom building, and improve accessibility between the Torrey Pines Lodge, upper parking lots and the new restrooms. Torrey Pines State Beach and the North and South parking lots for the beach will remain open.
The public is being advised that starting on:
- Monday, Sept. 21: The reserve’s road will be closed to vehicles. The Lodge and Trail Interpretive Kiosk, located in the west parking lot, will also be closed for the season.
- Tuesday, Sept. 22: The reserve will be closed to all visitors, including pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles. The closure includes all trails, the Beach Trail Staircase, the Lodge and both upper parking lots.
This closure will allow State Parks to continue utility improvements, such as installing new gas, water, wastewater and communication lines, as well as accessibility upgrades, including updated accessible parking stalls and an accessible pedestrian path from the upper parking lot to the restroom and Lodge. During the first phase of the project, most of the work occurred underground and included massive utility upgrades necessary for modern, sustainable facilities. Due to the reserve’s sensitive habitat, meticulous monitoring was required for this controlled excavation.
