July Weekends, 2018

Updated 3/20/2020: In an effort to protect public health and the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff as the state responds to the continued threat of COVID-19 (coronavirus), California State Parks is postponing the Junior Lifeguard Program registration for summer programs until May and will reevaluate at that time. Participants who have already enrolled will not be dropped. If you have questions please reach out to the specific program for assistance.

The department is monitoring the COVID-19 situation carefully and is committed to following the state’s efforts to help slow the spread of the pandemic disease.
We also remind everyone to practice social distancing and maintain at least six feet between other visitors and anyone who is coughing and sneezing.

Enrollment opens April 15, 2018 for our single session Junior Lifeguard Program

Dear Junior Lifeguard Families and Prospective new Junior Guards,

Welcome to the first EVER Junior Lifeguard Program to be offered at Sonoma Coast State Park!  We are planning 4 weekends ( 8 days ) packed with beach activities, field trips, first aid instruction and most of all…FUN!  Located in the tabs to the right are your enrollment documents and your parent handbook.  Please take a moment to read and share the information with your Junior Lifeguard prior to the start of the program on what to expect.  We also have a document, How to prepare for Junior Lifeguards, which will help to prepare your Junior Lifeguard for the different activities.

2018 Program Information

The objective of the Sonoma Coast Junior Lifeguard program is to provide quality water safety education. The program improves young people’s physical conditioning, their understanding and respect for the coastal wave activity and their respect for themselves, their peers and their parents.

Recreational activities are accomplished by instruction and practice in open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, body boarding, skin diving and self-rescue. Respect for themselves is gained though the Junior Lifeguard’s personal progress and pride in accomplishment. Team Building, by groups working together, is facilitated by the instructors and programs through beach and water activities.
