Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers two ways to volunteer, each with different duties and training requirements:

Volunteer

The Volunteers in Parks Program requires only brief training in the Reserve rules and regulations. Volunteers assist with a variety of hands-on stewardship and support activities, including:

  • Removal of invasive species with the Whacky Weeders
  • Participation in monthly bird counts
  • Garden upkeep with the Natural Resources team
  • Assisting the Maintenance team with trail restoration, cleanups, and other park repair projects

To learn more, please contact the Reserve staff for details: torrey.pines@parks.ca.gov or access our volunteer portal for more information and application instructions.

Docent

The docent program requires completing a comprehensive training program, focusing on the natural sciences and interpretive techniques.

  • Leading nature walks
  • Staff the Visitor Center
  • Participate in the Children’s Education Programs
  • Trailhead Information Kiosk (TIK)
  • Beach & Lagoon Information Kiosk (BLIK)

The next training begins in early March 2026. Applications are available HERE:
