California State Parks and Partners Announce Arts in California Parks Advisory Committee

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California State Parks is excited to introduce the Arts in California Parks Advisory Committee, a collective of visionaries from both the public and private sectors who will advise and inform the development and implementation of the Arts in California Parks program announced in October 2023. The goal of the program, which is a collaboration among State Parks, the California Arts Council, and Parks California, is to help make California’s parks more inclusive and welcoming.

California State Parks Recommends $6.7 Million in Grants to Develop and Renovate Local Recreational Trails

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks has recommended $6.7 million to the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreation Trails grant program (RTP) for seven local nonmotorized trail projects. Cities such as Galt in Sacramento County would receive funding to develop 1,500 linear feet of paved trail extending the Emerald Vista Trail in two sections. In Santa Clara County, the City of Gilroy would be able to construct a new 4,500 linear foot multiuse trail segment with educational signage and distance markers from Kern Avenue to Day Road.

California State Parks Invites Public to Celebrate Chinese New Year at Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park

WEAVERVILLE, Calif.— History will come alive when a traditional Chinese lion dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP) to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This free special event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, will take place in front of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds,” a Taoist temple built in 1874 that is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California.

California State Parks Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near Palisades Tahoe

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif.— California State Parks today confirmed a fatal shooting at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley. Around 10 a.m. this morning, a State Park Peace Officer (SPPO) attempted to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in Tahoe City. That pursuit was terminated in a traffic collision near Olympic Valley Inn at Palisades Tahoe. The subject exited the vehicle armed with a knife and an officer-involved shooting took place involving the SPPO, just as a California Highway Patrol officer arrived to assist. Officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts the subject succumbed to his injuries. The public is advised to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.

California State Historical Resources Commission To Consider Ten Properties for Action

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—The California State Historical Resources Commission (Commission) will consider ten nominations for federal historic designation at its meeting in Sacramento on Friday, February 2, at 9 a.m., in Sacramento. The nominations include several historic districts, a steel suspension bridge in Los Angeles County, and the Sacramento Shops Historic District.

Division of Boating and Waterways Now Accepting Grant Applications for Shoreline Erosion Control and Public Beach Restoration Program

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting grant applications from government agencies to help slow, stop, or reverse the impact of erosion on California’s shoreline. The deadline to submit applications for the Shoreline Erosion Control and Public Beach Restoration programs is Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, by noon.

Sonoma Developmental Center’s Open Space Lands Transferred to California State Parks

ELDRIDGE, Calif.— California State Parks today announced the transfer of jurisdiction of approximately 650 acres of Sonoma Developmental Center’s (SDC) open space property to State Parks. SDC’s open space area is connected to Jack London State Historic Park (SHP). Sharing a common boundary, watershed, critical wildlife corridor, connecting trails, and view shed, the property is an integral part of the region’s biodiversity and recreational opportunities.

California State Parks Offers New Reservation Drawing Pilot Program for Cabins at Mount Tamalpais State Park

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks today announced a new approach to reserving the highly sought after Steep Ravine Cabins at Mount Tamalpais State Park. Using a lottery-style system to make a reservation, the department’s new pilot program aims to enhance access and equity by allowing outdoor enthusiasts to apply for free for a reservation drawing up to eight months in advance. The drawings are selected randomly and conducted seven months ahead of the reservation dates through California’s state park reservation system, ReserveCalifornia.

Kick Off 2024 With Annual First Day Hikes at More Than 60 Participating State Parks

Currently, up to 60 state parks will be participating, with over 70 guided hikes taking place across the state.
