California State Parks Awards $30 Million in Grants Supporting Safe and Sustainable Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation

SACRAMENTO – California State Parks’ Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division today announced $30 million in grant awards focused on safe, responsible and sustainable off-highway vehicle (OHV) experiences. The funding, part of OHMVR’s 2024 Grants and Cooperative Agreements (GCA) program, will support 129 projects by 88 local and federal agencies, districts and nonprofit organizations throughout California.

Invasive Non-Native Golden Mussel Discovered in the Sacramento – San Joaquin Delta

SACRAMENTO — Golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei), an invasive, non-native freshwater bivalve, was recently discovered in the Port of Stockton by California Department of Water Resources staff while conducting routine operations. Golden mussels have also been identified at O’Neill Forebay in Merced County after undergoing genetic testing for confirmation.

Division of Boating and Waterways Now Accepting Grant Letters of Intent to Address Coastal Erosion

SACRAMENTO – California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting letters of intent from public agencies interested in grant funding for projects that address the impacts of coastal erosion on California’s ocean and bay shorelines. DBW invites applications for local assistance grants through its Shoreline Erosion Control Program and Public Beach Restoration Program.

California State Parks Removes More Than 25,000 Illegal Cannabis Plants This Season

SACRAMENTO — California State Parks continues to combat illegal cannabis grows within and near state park properties through its Cannabis Watershed Protection Program (CWPP). During the 2024 season, the CWPP’s Special Enforcement Team (SET) led 16 operations in or near state parks’ properties resulting in 7 arrests and the removal of 25,558 cannabis plants, 4,820 pounds of processed cannabis, and 18 firearms. Numerous environmental crimes related to water diversion and water pollution were also  documented.

GUERNEVILLE — California State Parks and Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods are celebrating the designation of Pond Farm Pottery as a National Historic Landmark following a plaque dedication ceremony Oct. 26. Officially designated by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland on Dec. 11, 2023, Pond Farm Pottery is California State Parks’ 30th National Historic Landmark, and its first new designation since 1999.

California State Parks Reopens Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area After Post Fire

GORMAN — California State Parks today announced the partial reopening of Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) on Friday, Nov. 1, nearly four months after the devastating Post Fire tore through more than 10,000 acres of the park and forced its closure. Some restrictions on admission and vehicles are in place as the park continues to recover from the wildfire damage.

SANTA CRUZ — California State Parks and Save the Redwoods League today released a new Forest Management Strategy (FMS) aimed at restoring and protecting three state parks in Santa Cruz County following the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire. The devastating wildfire burned through more than 24,000 acres in Big Basin Redwoods, Año Nuevo and Butano state parks. The FMS outlines critical actions needed to help the forests recover and to improve wildfire and climate resilience in the parks and neighboring communities.

Division of Boating and Waterways Offers Grants to Help Keep California’s Waterways Clean

SACRAMENTO – California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) is now accepting grant applications from government agencies to purchase and deploy floating restrooms on lakes and reservoirs with limited landside access. A total of $1.05 million in federal and state funding is available for approximately four ADA-compliant floating restrooms. Eligible applicants are encouraged to submit a grant application to DBW by 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18.
