This exhibit offers the opportunity to encounter history through narratives of historical individuals who lived in the Santa Cruz Mission Adobe. The People Who Lived Here is comprised of audio recordings and artistic renderings by contemporary California Native Americans who share multiple perspectives, difficult details, and tender insights describing the life events of Isidro Sauset, Lorenzo Asisara, Maria Buena, Petra Nicanor and Clementina Montero, all of whom witnessed mission life and its impacts in this space.

This exhibit was co-created with Native American community members whose ancestors experienced the California Mission system and was based on research by Dr. Martin Rizzo-Martinez. After three years of working together, State Parks is proud to share this opportunity to witness the history of the Santa Cruz Mission through the voices of contemporary California Native Americans.

The People Who Lived Here exhibit is part of the ongoing work of State Parks, through the Reexamining Our Past Initiative, to identify inadequate interpretive programs or exhibits that fall short in fully contextualizing California’s history in parks. The format of an audio tour allows for visitors to choose to opt-in to the experience, as this exhibit does describe hard histories from the Santa Cruz Mission.

The multimedia tour is available as a walking tour or can be accessed remotely via the Virtual Adventurer App starting Nov. 2.
