Guided Hike: The Mountain Provides

Starting at 9am at Bootjack

Join State Park Interpreter Hillary Colyer on a moderate hike that explores the bounty of the mountain and can serve as an active version of the evening campfire program.

In the past, Mount Tamalpais provided people with a large variety of useful plants. Though collecting is currently not allowed in the State Park or in neighboring park lands, we will explore the astonishing number of plants that have been used as food, medicine, and/or as materials for buildings, crafts, or tools that are found along the trails here.

Meeting location: Bootjack Parking Lot.

Hike description: Moderate loop hike that goes up the Bootjack Trail from Bootjack Campground to Mountain Theater, and then descends Upper Old Mine Trail to Old Stage Road, and then returns to Bootjack on Matt Davis. Total distance is about 2.7 miles, with a total elevation gain of about 600 feet. With discussion time and breaks, the activity should finish around 12:30pm.

Additional information: Weather may be variable with dampness and chill if there is fog or very warm weather in the sun. Layered clothing is recommended. There are restrooms and water fountains at the trailhead and enroute, but participants should carry drinking water. Snacks are recommended, too. Ticks and poison oak may be present along the trail. Pets other than service animals are not allowed on these trails.
