California State Parks Urges Public To Help Reimagine Big Basin Redwoods State Park

BOULDER CREEK, Calif. -- California State Parks is urging the public to get involved and to learn more about the “Reimagining Big Basin” project, a project that will memorialize the broad vision for reestablishing California’s oldest State Park. With the loss of all park infrastructure in the 2020 CZU Fire, the park has been closed while recovery work has been underway. During this time, State Parks has kicked off this planning project to initiate the public process of planning the park’s visitor serving facilities needed to provide the visitor experiences at the park.

Kick-Start 2022 by Enjoying the Outdoors With First Day Hikes at More Than 40 California State Parks

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks is inviting Californians and visitors from around the world to kick-start the new year in a healthy way by getting some fresh air and enjoying the outdoors with the annual First Day Hikes on Jan. 1, 2022. More than 40 state parks and over 50 guided hikes will take place across the state in this national-led effort by the First Day Hikes program, which encourages individuals and families to experience the beautiful natural and cultural resources found in the outdoors so that they may be inspired to take advantage of these treasures throughout the year.

State Parks Employees Honored with Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor Award for Heroic Acts

SACRAMENTO, Calif.— California State Parks is proud to announce that 15 State Park Peace Officers (SPPOs) and one seasonal non-peace officer lifeguard were honored today with the Governor’s State Employee Medal of Valor Awards for acts of heroism. The Medal of Valor Award is the highest honor the state can bestow upon its employees, given on behalf of Governor Newsom.

Dam Safety Project to Temporarily Close Basalt Campground and Day Use Area at San Luis Reservoir SRA

Gustine, Calif.— California State Parks today announced the extended temporary closure of the Basalt Campground and Day Use Area at San Luis Reservoir State Recreation Area due to a Safety of Dams Project. The closure is expected to begin as early as February 2022 and may last 10 years. Reservation holders will be contacted directly by State Parks’ reservation system -- ReserveCalifornia.com. Alternative campgrounds and day use locations will remain open in the park complex during the temporary closure.
