BIG SUR, Calif. – Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park will reopen to the public next Saturday, July 1, after an 11-month closure due to the Soberanes Fire and winter storms. Visitors once again will be able to use the campground and all four day-use lots. Also, a new shuttle service will be available to visitors. A van will pick up visitors from the Andrew Molera State Park parking lot and shuttle them to various locations north of the collapsed Pfeiffer Bridge, including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park.
Located on the western slope of the Santa Lucia Mountains in Monterey County, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park offers facilities for both camping and day-only visits along the Big Sur River. Visitors can follow the river among redwoods, conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows. A large campground accommodates hikers, bikers, car campers and RVers.
Below is an update on the services available with the reopening of the state park:
- Shuttle Service: Starting July 1, visitors will have a new way to move around various locations of the collapsed Pfeiffer Bridge, including Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. For more information, such as cost of service, hours of operation, and pickup/drop-off locations, please visit Sur Transportation’s website. NOTE: While the parking lot at Andrew Molera State Park will be open for shuttle parking, all other facilities at this park, including the campground and trails, remain closed.
- Trails: The only trails currently open at this time include the Liewald Flat Trail, Nature Trail, Redwood Deck, River Path and Warden’s Path.
- Campground: Nearly the entire campground, along with all four-day use lots will open.
- Big Sur Lodge: The lodge remains open. This site has 61 guest rooms, a conference center and a grocery store. For more information, please visit www.BigSurLodge.com.
Big Sur State Park was one of many state parks in the region closed due to impacts from last year’s Soberanes Fire, which burned more than 132,000 acres, and subsequent rain systems that totaled more than 95 inches of precipitation. Other impacted state parks include Garrapata, Point Sur Light Station, Andrew Molera, Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Limekiln. Some parks continue to remain closed and others are partially open.
As of February 15, Highway 1 is impassable in both directions at Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge. The bridge has been demolished by Caltrans and is being rebuilt. Anticipated re-opening for through traffic is fall 2017. Currently, northern access to Big Sur is open from Carmel to the Big Sur Station. Businesses are open. South of Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge, access is still closed on Highway 1 at Ragged Point. Nacimiento-Fergusson Road is open to the public, allowing public access to Highway 1 between Gorda and Limekiln State Park.
