MALIBU —California State Parks today announced repairs will begin later this month on Malibu Pier in Malibu Lagoon State Beach following the recent award of an emergency contract. This marks a major step toward safely reopening the end of the pier, which has been temporarily closed since January 2025 as a precautionary safety measure to address critical structural concerns. The rest of the pier has remained open to the public.

Construction is anticipated to begin in mid-October and is expected to last approximately three months. The $2.125 million project, funded through Proposition 4 (2024 Climate Bond), will repair or replace deteriorated and missing pilings and replace bracing to strengthen the pier. State Parks anticipates completing repairs by the end of January 2027. The emergency contract awarded to Cushman Contracting Corporation was aided by Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency proclamation on Sept. 21 ahead of the anticipated El Niño storm season.

Following the temporary closure of the end of the pier, subsequent above-water and underwater inspections confirmed the need for significant repairs. A specialized ocean engineering consultant completed a comprehensive structural assessment in June 2026, identifying deteriorated and missing pilings requiring repair or replacement.

State Parks is coordinating with the State Fire Marshal, California Coastal Commission, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, State Lands Commission and State Water Resources Control Board to expedite regulatory reviews and emergency permitting. The department also continues to work closely with the City of Malibu and other partners.

The iconic Malibu Pier offers a variety of activities, including fishing, dining and breathtaking views of the surf. State Parks will share updates on the webpage as major repair milestones are reached.
