Why is the end of the Malibu Pier closed?

In January 2025, California State Parks temporarily closed the end of Malibu Pier after preliminary findings showed structural concerns. Additional detailed assessments confirmed these initial findings, and the end of the pier remains closed as a precautionary safety measure while necessary structural repairs are addressed. The rest of the pier remains open for the public to enjoy.

When will the end of the pier reopen?
State Parks is currently reviewing the findings to determine the best strategy for repairs and the timeline for safely and fully reopening the pier to the public. The department is still determining the costs to repair and fully reopen the pier along with identifying a potential funding source. Due to the complexity of these repairs, a tentative timeline for reopening the pier cannot be determined at this time.

Please continue to check this webpage or the Malibu Lagoon State Beach webpage and the Angeles District State Parks Facebook and Instagram pages for updates.

Will the businesses on the pier remain open?
The Malibu Farm Pier Café and the Surfshop/Souvenir Shop at the end of the pier are temporarily closed during this time. However, the Malibu Farm Restaurant at the Pier, located outside the closure area, remains open. Beach Rentals and beach equipment services are also available prior to entering the pier.

Can I still fish from the pier?
Visitors are welcome to fish from the open areas of the pier. Please observe posted guidelines for permitted fishing locations.

Where can I find updates?
Updates on the closure and reopening of the pier will be posted on this webpage, on the Malibu Lagoon State Beach webpage and on the Angeles District State Parks Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook pages for updates.

What should I do if I have already made plans to visit the pier?
Visitors are encouraged to still enjoy the portions of the pier that remain open, as well as the surrounding beaches and attractions in the Malibu area. You can find other nearby state parks at parks.ca.gov/Find-A-Park.

Will this assessment lead to further closures of the pier?
Further closures of the pier could result when repairs begin to allow for construction materials and equipment. Exact areas of the pier and the timeline of additional closures is unknown at this time.
