In celebration of Earth Day, National Geographic Explorers will gather at Malibu Creek State Park for a special evening event titled WonderFest, a campfire storytelling experience designed to spark curiosity, connection, and care for our home planet.
Taking place from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on April 25, WonderFest will transform the park’s traditional campfire program into an immersive evening of storytelling from the field. National Geographic Explorers who are scientists, conservationists, photographers, and storytellers will share firsthand accounts of discovery, adventure, and the moments of wonder that shape their work around the world.
From encounters with wildlife to discoveries in remote ecosystems, the evening will highlight the power of curiosity and exploration to deepen our understanding of Earth. The gathering is designed to be welcoming, interactive, and inspiring for Earthlings 10+.
WonderFest invites families, students, educators, and community members to celebrate Earth Day together under the stars while hearing stories that remind us why protecting our planet matters. Guests can expect an informal campfire atmosphere where science meets storytelling and where the spirit of exploration is shared across generations.
“Wonder is one of the most powerful forces in science and storytelling,” organizers said. “When people hear the stories behind discovery, the curiosity, the surprises, and the challenges, it reminds us that exploration is still alive and that everyone has a role to play in caring for our planet.”
The event is open to park visitors and campers. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the park and bring a sense of curiosity. This event is free. Bring a blanket and/or chair for additional comfort. Park at the main trailhead parking lot and follow the signs to the campground Amphitheater (about a 0.25 walk).
