Description:
Join us for a special event at the Historic Adamson House as we celebrate the legacy of Nick Gabaldón, the first documented Black surfer and his enduring impact on the history of surfing and racial inclusivity. Gabaldon became a legend when he regularly paddled 12 miles roundtrip from the Inkwell, the designated Black beach in Santa Monica, to Surfrider beach in Malibu in order to catch better waves. A talented surfer with a warm personality, Gabaldon broke barriers in the Malibu surf community.
The evening begins with an engaging talk moderated by filmmaker David Mesfin with panelists including surfer and activist Rick Blocker, filmmaker Richard Yelland, and a video appearance by acclaimed female surfer Vickie Williams who knew Gabaldon personally. The panelists will delve into Gabaldón's life, his connection to the Southern California coast, and the broader significance of his contributions to cultural and social history.
Following the talk, we’ll screen the inspiring documentary Wade in the Water: A Journey into Black Surfing and Aquatic Culture. This film explores the rich history of Black surfers and watermen, highlighting the powerful intersections of race, identity, and the ocean.
