Overview
Castle Crags State Park is named for the 6,000-feet tall glacier-polished projecting rocks to which game hikers may climb for a great view of the area including Mount Shasta. Visitors should be aware of how high altitude may affect them. The park is 6 miles south of Dunsmuir on I-5. Phone (530) 235-2684 or (530) 225-2065 for more information.Camping

The Vista Point Trail is an ‘out-and-back’ accessible trail that is 0.25 miles each way leading to overlook with views of three distinct volcanic features: Castle Crags, Mount Shasta, and Gray Rocks. The overlook has accessible picnic tables, bench, interpretive panel, and viewing scope. The surface is compacted soil. The trail is generally flat at less than 5% slopes with intermittent sections between 5% to 8% and one section at 15 feet at 10%. Accessible parking and an accessible vault restroom are located at the large parking area at the end of Vista Point Road.The Root Creek Trail is an ‘out-and-back’ accessible trail that is 1.0 mile each way through coniferous forest with periodic benches and interpretive panels. The trail includes a short boardwalk over an upland natural spring area and shares a short section with the Pacific Crest Trail. The surface is compacted soil. The trail is generally flat at less than 5% slopes with intermittent sections between 5% to 8%. Accessible parking is located at the trailhead. An accessible vault restroom and additional accessible parking is located at the large parking area at the end of Vista Point Road.
