(COLOMA, Calif.) –Construction on a replica of the legendary Sutter’s Mill in Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park will pass a significant milestone next week, as framers using traditional methods will lift the second story timbers of the new mill into place on the structure.
The construction will take place on Tuesday September 9, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event is open to the public.
The Sutter’s Mill replica is being built closer to its historically accurate location and the discovery site. The original construction of the Mill resulted in the California Gold Rush, and is the reason for the National Historic Landmark designation since 1955.The reconstruction project is being funded with Proposition 84 bond funds, and will eventually replace the aged and damaged existing mill display at the park.
The California Gold Rush started when nuggets of the precious metal were discovered in the mill race at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, January 24th 1848 by James Marshall. Sutter’s Mill is located at Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma on Highway 49 north of Placerville. The park serves up to 400,000 visitors a year including more than 100,000 school children studying the history of California.
Note to reporters: A media zone will be set up to photograph the timber raising work.
