SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY — California State Parks today announced the reopening of Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area (SRA) following a nearly month-long closure caused by the Lake Fire in late June. Visitors can now fully access the park via State Route (SR) 138, which was closed due to fire damage, and the main entrance, both of which have reopened. The highway will be subject to one-way traffic control on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. while Caltrans continues to repair the roadway.
The Lake Fire, which began in the park on June 28, burned 489 acres across Silverwood Lake SRA and the adjacent San Bernardino National Forest, prompting a full evacuation of the park and the shutdown of SR-138.
While most of the recreation area is now open, visitors are urged to stay out of burn zones due to potential hazards. Restricted areas include:
- The perimeter of Lots 4 and 5 in the Cleghorn Day Use area
- The western shoreline from Cleghorn Cove to Chamise Cove (including the Pacific Crest Trail)
- The Chamise Boat-In area
California State Parks will continue to monitor conditions and appreciates the public’s support in keeping these areas undisturbed for safety and recovery. For updates on the park, please check the Silverwood Lake SRA webpage and Facebook page.
