First Day Hikes at River Parks
Happy New Year from the Rivers Sector! January 1st, 2026 our river parks would like to welcome you to a unique opportunity to choose your adventure! Each park located in the Rivers Sector is offering outdoor experiences to enjoy with the family! We at Rivers Sector would like to thank you for a wonderful 2025 and the continued support of our Central Valley river parks.
Dos Rios: Community members are invited to Dos Rios to learn about future park amenities and enjoy a First Day Hike! State Park staff and partners will discuss what it takes to plan a new state park and how to make your opinions heard. Learn how you can give your vision a voice and join staff for two different guided walk opportunities. Coffee and light refreshments provided. 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
McConnell State Recreation Area: Junior Ranger Scavenger Hunt with a State Park Peace Officer. Discover some of the natural wonders at McConnell State Recreation Area. Join Ranger Muniz as he leads you into the wild areas to discover fauna, flora and evidence of wildlife through a fun and immersive scavenger hunt! Earn your Junior Ranger badge and stamp. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
George J. Hatfield State Recreation Area: Join Park staff for a Riparian Habitat Scavenger Hunt! This easy .5-mile walk will take you through the riparian and river habitat located at one of the Central Valley’s most beautiful preserved natural areas. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Great Valley Grasslands State Park: Did you know Great Valley Grasslands State Park is home to some amazing vernal pools? Come and learn about vernal pools and the ecosystem that exists in them at Great Valley Grasslands State Park. 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.
Caswell Memorial State Park: Come connect with nature and gain a deeper appreciation for the complex beauty and incredible biodiversity of Caswell’s oak woodlands! On our 2-mile guided walk we will learn about our dominant species of oak, Valley Oak and uncover how different species rely on this ecosystem for food, cover, and reproduction! 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
