Guided Hike: Thankful for Nature
Starts at 9am at Pantoll
Join State Park Interpreter Hillary on a rambling route that explores a variety of Mt Tam's nature and some epic views (weather permitting). The mountain offers us a lot we can be thankful for!
Hike Route: The route starts with a gentle downhill through woodlands on Lower Old Mine before ocean views open up in the coastal scrub around Cardiac Hill. We'll traverse short stretches of Deer Park Fire Road and Dipsea Trail (keeping an eye out for any Dipsea Quad runners) to get to TCC Trail and its interspersed redwood forest. At the end of TCC, we'll enjoy a break in Van Wyck Meadow before taking a slight detour on Troop 80 Spur and Troop 80 Trail to view some serpentine chaparral. From there, we'll ascend Bootjack Trail through Bootjack campground to pick up Riding & Hiking Trail to enjoy some grasslands and excellent views before finally descending on Upper Old Mine Trail. The entire hike should take about 4 hours with breaks, snack, and photo time (no lunch break -- please plan on eating lunch after the hike).
Hike Difficulty: Moderate. Total distance is about 4.5 miles and total elevation gain is about 750 feet.
Additional information: Weather may be variable and trails are steep and rugged in places, so please dress in layers and wear suitable footwear. Restrooms are available at the trailhead and enroute. Water is also available, but hike participants should still carry drinking water. Snacks are recommended. Ticks and poison oak may be present along the trail. Dogs other than service animals are not allowed on this hike.
