Student Art Collaboration
[Placeholder: Swallowtail]
In the Fall of 2024, thirty-five senior students in the California State University, Sacramento Photography BFA program spent months researching and photographing the landscape of the State Indian Museum and Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park. Students visited the site repeatedly, learning from Native American contemporary artists, culture bearers and Traditional Ecological Knowledge specialists, as well as State Parks staff. The focus of their ongoing investigations was to recognize —and, in many cases, attempt to repair — our relationships to the land on which we live.
[Placeholder: Swallowtail] emerged from a collaboration between Sac State Photo and California State Parks, Sacramento District. Culminating in exhibits at the State Indian Museum and Verge Center for the Arts, this iteration of the [Placeholder] project offered students an invaluable opportunity to engage in timely conversations regarding land, art, and belonging. We invite you to view this digital exhibit and accompanying short film, which offers a window into the project and presents the students' final artwork:
