The State Park Interpreter I (PI) will coordinate the K-12 Access program which engages students and teachers in learning about the park. The position includes both front line interpretive work as well as office based duties such as planning, research and development of interpretive projects and programs. Duties include implementation of the Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students (PORTS) Program, digital media and content development, and delivery of distance learning presentations for the public with a focus on the K-12 community. Additionally, the position will be responsible for working closely with all staff and volunteers in the park to accomplish the tasks necessary to operate, protect, interpret and maintain the park to the highest quality standards. This includes implementing interpretive programs (onsite school visits, Junior Rangers, guided walks, campfire program) with a focus on giant sequoia tree interpretation. The position may serve as a lead for seasonal aides, interns and volunteers.

Columbia State Historic Park - Final Filing  7/30/2024

 The State Park Interpreter I will provide Gold Rush era cultural interpretation and education programs to K-12 students from across California via distance learning platforms as well as in-person programs. Columbia State Historic Park is a popular location for 4th grade field trips as it is one of the best-preserved Gold Rush towns in California and provides teachers multiple opportunities to connect students to the past as well as support curriculum standards. This position will be responsible for the implementation of the parks PORTS (Parks Online Resources for Teachers and Students®) Program, a popular distance learning opportunity for classrooms. They will also establish and maintain cooperative relations with California’s K-12 education community to enhance digital engagement and in-person school group interpretation opportunities at Columbia State Historic Park. This position works to utilize 21st century tools to create equitable access to California State Parks for all of California’s youth.

To be eligible, you must meet the minimum qualifications established by the Department of Human Resources AND either be currently eligible or eligible for reinstatement as a PC 830.2, California State Peace Officer.  The reporting location for this position is Dos Rios Ranch in Modesto, CA. This position will work under the general supervision of the State Park Superintendent III. The State Park Peace Officer Supervisor I (Lifeguard) is responsible for the visitor services, public safety and law enforcement and aquatic functions of Dos Rios Ranch (Proposed new State Park). SPPOs will also assist with supervision of all river park units, including Caswell Memorial State Park, George Hatfield SRA, McConnell SRA, and Great Valley Grasslands.The State Park Peace Officer Supervisor I (Lifeguard) serves as a working supervisor responsible to ensure efficient, effective and comprehensive visitor services operations while performing safety and enforcement, patrol, interpretation, resource protection/management, aquatic program oversight and effective visitor facility operation.
