Building Native Habitat at Rio de Los Angeles State Park- Volunteer Drop-In Workday

Event Name: Building Native Habitat at Rio de Los Angeles State Park- Volunteer Drop-In Workday "TestPlot focused!"

Date: Sunday, January 18

Time: 9:00 – 11:30am

Location:Rio de Los Angeles. Exact location provided upon registration.

Description:

If you love California native plants, the LA River, and urban habitat restoration, please help us plant, weed, water, and mulch our native habitat at our TestPlots

Why: Be part of building vital, climate-resilient landscapes for the benefit of both local wildlife and surrounding communities. Through a partnership with Audubon at Debs Park, Theodore Payne Foundation, Terremoto/TestPlot and others, this site is also particularly focused on creating a habitat for the endangered Least Bell's Vireo and Pollinators! You'll learn about the species that we are planting and caring for, as well as their role in supporting local wildlife and biodiversity.

Who: TestPlot is an independent nonprofit organization and State Parks is  dedicated to supporting the three State Parks adjacent to the L.A. River: Los Angeles State Historic Park in Chinatown/Northeast DTLA; Rio de Los Angeles State Park in Cypress Park; and the Bowtie Parcel, the former G1 Railyard in Glassell Park that will soon become the third River adjacent State Park. We protect and enhance the community, cultural, natural, and historic resources of the River Parks.

What to Expect:

  • You’ll work with a small group of committed, long-term Rio volunteers and California State Parks volunteer leads and park staff.
  • With hand tools, wheelbarrows, hoses, and buckets, you will dig, plant, weed, water, and spread mulch in the planting areas.
  • We're interested in adding five new regular volunteers who have the interest and capacity for a consistent, ongoing relationship with us.
  • We seek folks who want to learn deeply about the site and become fellow stewards of this public land!

What's Required:

  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
  • Meet at the flagpole at the beginning of the shift.
  • All participants must sign a State Parks waiver which will be provided on-site.
