Mission San Juan Bautista (1797) is solely owned and operated by the Catholic Church and the rest of the Plaza is owned and operated by California State Parks. Parts of the original, 200 year old Mission complex are within the State Historic Park and reveal much about the Mission’s history.

Work done by several state archaeologists in partnership with Tribal Partners has expanded the archaeological record of the surrounding State Parks land.  This work is ongoing and is expanding our knowledge of how Native People at the Mission lived, worked, and interacted with their environment outside of daily church activities.
