San Juan Bautista

Mission San Juan Bautista (1797) is solely owned and operated by the Catholic Church and the rest of the Plaza is owned and operated by the California State Parks System. Although the Church and Convento are still owned by the Catholic Church, surrounding State Park areas reveal much about the mission complex 200 years ago.

Archaeologist Glenn Farris has carried out recent excavations to locate former structures that may have housed Indian families at the mission. His work promises to shed new light on the Native peoples who built the buildings, raised the crops and carried out the industrial work at this remote outpost.
