“YEAR OF THE EARTH PIG”
COME CELEBRATE THE CHINESE NEW YEAR
Weaverville, Calif. — History will come alive once again in Weaverville when a Chinese New Year Celebration and Lion Dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park. This free special event, co-sponsored by California State Parks and the Weaverville Joss House Association, will begin at 11 a.m. in front of the 1874 Chinese Taoist Temple. The Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park is located in downtown Weaverville at the corner of Main and Oregon Streets.
The Lion Dance Group, Eastern Ways, will be performing the Lion Dance at the park this year at 11 am. A Lion Dance is one of China’s oldest and unique cultural performance arts. Chinese believe “the lion will preserve peace and tranquility in the community and prevail over all evil to bring joy and happiness in the New Year.” Hot tea, fortune cookies will be available.
After the performance at the Joss House, the colorful lions will be seen along Weaverville’s main street stopping at various stores to dance and bring good luck to the businesses and the community for the coming year. For more information about the event, please contact (530) 623-5284.
