Junior Ranger Program

Explore, Learn, and Protect! Join Rangers for a fun event where students will participate in activities to become Junior Rangers, while learning about the role of public lands. Teachers and chaperones will guide students through various activities. Students will explore a local park site, learn about the history, culture, nature, and recreational activities found at National Parks, and discuss ways they can help protect their parks.

The Junior Ranger event is a National Park Service program conducted in partnership with California State Parks that promotes the various recreational, cultural, historic and scientific themes found throughout public lands. This event will feature a combination of curriculum-based and outdoor activities designed to provide students with a meaningful experience on public lands close to where they live.

Students will experience this event in small groups of 8-10 students per teacher or chaperone, students will be led by the teacher or chaperone (not guided by Rangers or docents). Each group will have the opportunity to participate in the following: a nature walk/hike, a variety of activities that reflect science, nature and historic themes, and facilitate dialogue that prompts written and artistic responses. While some of these activities will be led by Rangers or docents, other activities are designed to be guided by the teacher or chaperone. Instructions will be posted for self-guided activities, please have students read out the steps and then begin the activity.

After participating in this event, students will receive a Junior Ranger badge sticker and a voucher which can be exchanged for an ‘Every Kid Outdoors’ pass at certain federal lands or water sites (http://www.nationalparks.org/ook/every-kid-in-a-park). This pass can be used by the fourth grade students’ families to access national parks and other public land areas for free through August 2020!

Offered at Malibu Creek State Park in Calabasas, Wednesdays-Fridays, September-December. Full grade level may participate in field trip.
