Monterey County Adopt-A-Beach Information

/pages/21284/images/AAB Logo Color.jpgMarine debris is more than an unsightly inconvenience for beach-bound vacationers or pleasure boaters; it is one of the world's most pervasive marine pollution problems.  By the simple process of moving from ship to sea, sewer to surf, or hand to sand, any manufactured material becomes marine debris.  Trash in our water and on our shorelines can be mistaken as food by marine animals.  If animals don't eat it, they could become entangled in it, which can have fatal results.

The California Coastal Commission, local organizations, agencies, and California State Parks coordinate the Adopt-A-Beach Program.  In order to adopt a beach, volunteers commit to clean the beach at least three times per year.  Anyone can get involved!

3 Steps to Adopt-A-Beach:

Step 1 - Determine the beach you want to clean:
Once you have chosen the beach you would like to clean, contact the beach manager responsible for that beach.  The beach manager will help you determine dates and
times for your cleanups, provide you with supplies, and tell you were to leave your trash when you are done.
Step 2 - Recruit friends, coworkers, and relatives to help you clean the beach:
Encourage the people you know to get involved and come out for your beach cleanup.  The more people who clean, the more trash is removed from California beaches, saving animals from becoming entangled or from eating trash.  Remember, all participants must fill out a waiver form (and parents sign for children under 18 years of age).  All waiver forms should be returned to the Beach Manager.
Step 3 - Clean the beach:
Dress for the weather!  Wear layers, and bring a hat and gloves.  Pick up trash, recyclable glass and plastic bottles, paper and aluminum.  And most importantly, have fun at the beach!

Western Snowy Plover Information
/pages/21284/images/Fort Ord - Tom Moss (3-16-07) 005_web.jpgMany beaches in Monterey County are closed to beach cleanup events during the nesting season of the western snowy plover (March 1st to September 15th every year).  The western snowy plover is a threatened shorebird that nests on the sand and may abandon its nest when disturbed.  Nesting habitat iin Monterey County ncludes all beaches from Monterey State Beach in Seaside north to Zmudowski State Beach.

Coastal Cleanup Day 2008
The 24th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day was Saturday, September 20th, 2008
from 9 AM to Noon
/pages/21284/images/montereystatebeach2_May2007_small.jpg
The 2008 Monterey County Coastal Cleanup Day was a Huge Success!
Throughout the county nearly 1,700 volunteers picked up over 12,000 pounds of trash and recyclable materials on 78 miles of coastline, rivers, lakes, creeks and roads.

Thank you so much to all the volunteers that came out on Saturday to help keep our beautiful Monterey County waterways clean for current and future generations!

Coastal Cleanup Day Information

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. On this day, 50,000 volunteers turn out to over 700 cleanup sites statewide to conduct what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, nearly 700,000 Californians have removed more than 10 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year.
