‘Safe Dunes Start With You’ Message Greets Labor Day Outdoor Enthusiasts at Oceano Dunes
California State Parks reminds all visitors to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) that “Safe Dunes Start With You” – “La Seguridad en las Dunas Comienza con Usted”. The bilingual safety campaign was launched recently to employ safe practices and remind visitors to be aware of their surroundings at this popular outdoor destination. Simple tips such as taking it slow, scouting your route, knowing your limits and treading lightly can improve safety for all visitors.
The following are some tips on how to recreate safely at Oceano Dunes SVRA:
Take It Slow
Keep your speed under 15 MPH on the beach and when riding near campsites or groups of people.
Scout Your Route
Check for slip faces or razorbacks, and know what is on the other side of a dune.
Be Hardheaded
Always wear properly fitted and secured helmets and safety equipment.
Know Your Limit
Only operate at speeds where you are able to maintain control at all times.
Flags Up for Safety
Orange or red flags are required to ride. Whip must be securely mounted and extend eight feet from the surface of the ground.
Quicksand
Avoid riding on wet sand and/or vegetation.
Tread Lightly
Protect your right to play…remember, wildlife has the right of way!
Messaging will also be shared with visitors on social media, local radio stations and on printed handouts that will be distributed at Oceano Dunes SVRA. Additionally, the campaign includes a billboard with the “Dune Safety Starts With You” message on southbound highway 101 near San Luis Obispo.

La campaña de seguridad bilingüe se lanzó recientemente para emplear practicas seguras y recordar a los visitantes que deben conocer sus alrededores en este lugar. Consejos de seguridad simples como conducir con calma, revisar su ruta, conocer sus límites y pasar con cuidado pueden mejorar la seguridad de todos los visitantes.
Los siguientes son algunos consejos sobre cómo recrear de forma segura en Oceano Dunes SVRA:
CONDUZCA CON CALMA
Mantenga su velocidad a 15 MPH o menos cuando conduzca cerca de campamentos o grupos de personas.
REVISE SU RUTA
Revise si hay zonas de deslizamientos o caídas siegas y sepa lo que hay del otro lado de una duna.
UTILICE UN CASCO
Siempre use un casco a la medida correcta y equipo de seguridad.
CONOZCA SU LÍMITE
Solo opere vehículos todo terreno a velocidades donde sea capaz de mantener el control en todo momento
USE BANDERAS O BANDEROLAS PARA SU SEGURIDAD
Las banderas o banderolas de color naranja o rojas son requeridas para montar vehículos todo terreno. Deben estar montadas de forma segura y extender ocho pies desde la superficie del suelo.
ARENA MOVEDIZA
Evite andar en arena mojada y/o vegetación.
PASE CON CUIDADO
Proteja su derecho recreativo… ¡recuerde que la vida silvestre tiene el derecho de paso!
Estos mensajes se compartirán con los visitantes en las redes sociales, unas estaciones de radio y en folletos que serán distribuidas en Oceano Dunes SVRA. Además, la campaña incluye una valla publicitaria con el mensaje “La Seguridad de las Dunas Comienza con Usted” en la carretera 101 hacia el sur, cerca de San Luis Obispo.
