Astronomy Night and "Fire Sale"!
Park: Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve SNR
Come out to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve on Saturday, June 29 to view the stars and planets of the summer night sky through Antelope Valley Astronomy Club telescopes! Club members will be set up on site from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. for viewing and answering questions about the unique celestial objects such as nebula, galaxies, clusters, Jupiter and Venus visible in the dark sky.
Arrive a little earlier for the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center’s “Fire Sale”! The visitor center will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. exclusively for this event, after narrowly escaping damage from the Powerhouse Fire. Peruse the gift shop and nature exhibits, and go for a hike up the Tehachapi Vista Point trail for a view over where the Powerhouse Fire burned the western end of the park! Volunteers will be available to direct interested hikers.
Please arrive before dark (by around 8:30) and turn off main headlights when entering the parking lot. Donations are requested at the event, benefiting the non-profit Poppy Reserve/Mojave Desert Interpretive Association; the funding source for interpretive supplies, programs and projects in many of our local State Parks. More information about the park and event can be found at www.parks.ca.gov and www.Facebook.com/PoppyReserve, and www.AVAstronomyClub.org.
