Bald Eagle Count at Lake Perris

Park: Calendar of Events

Organizers of the first bald eagle count of the winter are looking for volunteers to help at Lake Perris SRA on December 15th.

This year marks the 35th season that the San Bernardino National Forest has organized monthly winter bald eagle counts. Counts will be at Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Lake Silverwood State Recreation Area, Lake Hemet and Lake Perris State Recreation Area.

Volunteers will be stationed at vantage points around the lakes and they map and record any eagle observations during a one-hour period.

“We need all the eyes we can get helping look for eagles during these counts,” wildlife biologist Robin Eliason said. “These censuses wouldn’t be possible without our great volunteers. Plus, it’s a good excuse to get outside on a Saturday morning.

Organizers will explain everything volunteers need to do when they arrive for orientation. They should dress warmly and bring binoculars and a watch. No experience is needed.

Lake Perris State Park volunteers should contact the park office for information at (951) 940-5600, and plan to meet at the Lake Perris Regional Indian Museum at 8 a.m.
