Known as North America’s most popular train museum, the California State Railroad Museum is gearing up for a weekend of -- separate but festive -- celebratory activities on May 11, 12 & 13, don’t miss the rail-related fun!

Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet -- Friday Evening, May 11
Closed to the public but deserving of the community’s widespread recognition, approximately 600 volunteers will be honored at an Annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet for collectively dedicating nearly 130,000 hours of service to the California State Railroad Museum in 2011.  In fact, since the Museum’s 1976 inception, volunteers have contributed more than two million hours of service.

National Train Day -- Saturday, May 12
Two visually exciting 1950s-era vintage streamlined diesel locomotives from the California State Railroad Museum’s prized collection -- Southern Pacific 6051 and Western Pacific 913 -- will be on a special back-to-back configuration pulling the open-air gondolas and first class El Dorado observation lounge car on National Train Day.  National Train Day is a celebration of American railroading, trains and train travel in cities all across the country.

Mother’s Day Excursion Train Rides -- Sunday, May 13
The California State Railroad Museum plans to treat moms extra special on Mother’s Day by giving away complimentary Decadent Double Fudge Dipped Cake Pops to all mothers who take a train ride (trains depart hourly between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.), while supplies last.   General admission weekend excursion train ride tickets are available in-person on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 10:30 a.m. the day of the train ride at the Sacramento Southern Railroad ticket office, located on Front Street between “J” and “K” Streets in Old Sacramento. Train ride tickets cost $10 adults; $5 youths ages 6-17; free for children ages 5 and under ($15 for first class tickets aboard the first class El Dorado).  Advance tickets to ride the first-class El Dorado are available online at www.californiastaterailroadmuseum.org
