Central Valley
This "heartland" of California, center of the state's agriculture, features rivers, lakes and reservoirs for unsurpassed water recreation and camping opportunities. The region is also home of the fascinating Tule elk. Historic sites include the only town to be founded, financed and governed by African Americans; a U.S. Army fort from the 1850s; and the last of the early California small town opera houses.
