Division of Boating and Waterways Set to Control Aquatic Invasive Plants in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta

California State Parks’ Division of Boating and Waterways (DBW) today announced plans to control aquatic invasive plants in the west coast’s largest estuary, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and its southern tributaries. Starting March 6 through Nov. 30, 2024, DBW crews will begin herbicide treatments on water hyacinth, South American spongeplant, Uruguay water primrose, Alligator weed, Brazilian waterweed, curlyleaf pondweed, Eurasian watermilfoil, coontail, ribbon weed, and fanwort in the Delta. Depending on weather conditionsand plantgrowth/movement, treatment dates may change. Select areas of the Delta with high infestations or coverage of water hyacinth will be controlled using mechanical harvesting efforts through December 2024.

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial SP

California State Parks to Temporarily Close Main Trails to Popular Burney Falls for 2024 Season

BURNEY, Calif.— California State Parks today announced the temporary closure of the main trails that provide access to the highly-visited falls at McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park. The $835,000 project and trail closures are estimated to begin on April 1, pending weather conditions, and will remain in place for the duration of the 2024 summer season and most likely the fall season. The closure is to address critical repairs and improvements to the trails and natural slopes that have been impacted by high visitation and substantial use of these sensitive areas for foot access to the pool.

Debunking Misinformation About Lake Tahoe's Black Bears

In recent weeks, misinformation about black bears has been circulating online and on flyers posted throughout the Lake Tahoe community. The Tahoe Interagency Bear Team (TIBT) is a collective of bear experts across state and local agencies who study and understand these animals and have devoted much of their professional lives to ensure the health and well-being of the Lake Tahoe Basin’s black bears. TIBT would like to set the record straight by debunking some of those claims and educating the public about the real issues and dangers this misinformation poses.

Parks California Announces Close to $1 Million in Grant Funding to 2024 Route to Parks Grantees

California State Parks and Partners Announce Arts in California Parks Advisory Committee

California State Parks is excited to introduce the Arts in California Parks Advisory Committee, a collective of visionaries from both the public and private sectors who will advise and inform the development and implementation of the Arts in California Parks program announced in October 2023. The goal of the program, which is a collaboration among State Parks, the California Arts Council, and Parks California, is to help make California’s parks more inclusive and welcoming.

California State Parks Recommends $6.7 Million in Grants to Develop and Renovate Local Recreational Trails

California State Parks has recommended $6.7 million to the Federal Highway Administration’s Recreation Trails grant program (RTP) for seven local nonmotorized trail projects. Cities such as Galt in Sacramento County would receive funding to develop 1,500 linear feet of paved trail extending the Emerald Vista Trail in two sections. In Santa Clara County, the City of Gilroy would be able to construct a new 4,500 linear foot multiuse trail segment with educational signage and distance markers from Kern Avenue to Day Road.

California State Parks Invites Public to Celebrate Chinese New Year at Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park

WEAVERVILLE, Calif.— History will come alive when a traditional Chinese lion dance will be presented at the Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park (SHP) to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. This free special event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, will take place in front of the “Temple of the Forest Beneath the Clouds,” a Taoist temple built in 1874 that is the oldest continuously used Chinese temple in California.

California State Parks Provides Update on Officer-Involved Shooting Near Palisades Tahoe

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif.— California State Parks today confirmed a fatal shooting at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley. Around 10 a.m. this morning, a State Park Peace Officer (SPPO) attempted to stop a vehicle that was involved in a carjacking in Tahoe City. That pursuit was terminated in a traffic collision near Olympic Valley Inn at Palisades Tahoe. The subject exited the vehicle armed with a knife and an officer-involved shooting took place involving the SPPO, just as a California Highway Patrol officer arrived to assist. Officers provided medical aid to the subject, but despite their efforts the subject succumbed to his injuries. The public is advised to avoid the area as the investigation is ongoing.
