16 years or older? Become a State Lifeguard
Tryouts are only required for new Junior Guards and those that missed the previous year of Junior Guards. While some participants are excellent pool swimmers, swimming in open water can be intimidating. Participants are encouraged to practice open water swimming for the tryout.
Physical Events (goggles are permitted)
1. 150 yard open water swim -- heads down, freestyle ONLY
2. Tread water for 3 minutes
3. 10 yard underwater swim -- participants may come up for a breath but must go back under water and continue swimming the 10 yard distance.
Tryout dates:
TRYOUTS
Tryouts will be required for all participants this season given the lapse in participation last season.
Tryouts will be held on May 18th & 19th at 5 PM. Tryouts will be held at Negro Bar Swim Beach. Directions can be found on the Program Information page.
You may choose to attend whichever try out date works best for you.
The purpose of Junior Guard tryouts is to test participants swimming skills and their comfort in an open water environment. This is not a competitive or timed tryout, but is a method for State Parks lifeguards to evaluate each participants aquatic ability. State Parks Lifeguards will be on site for aquatic safety supervision.
