School Tours

Program Description:

This program is intended for children in grades 3 and 4. Children will experience the history of citrus from its origins to present day in a period setting replicating the height of the citrus industry in the Riverside area. Children will learn the significance of the citrus industry in the Riverside area, throughout California, and the world. They will learn how California’s second gold rush (agriculture) helped shaped and develop California today (economically, culturally, and technologically). Children will be able to tour through groves of citrus fruit which are commercially grown and through groves which represent over 70 different varieties of citrus in our Varietal Grove. The treat of the tour is the citrus sampling where children have an opportunity to see, feel, smell, and taste different varieties of citrus….right from the tree. This is a fabulous experience that makes an impression on many children, reinforces different ideas which are taught in the classroom, and provides hands on learning.

* Our School Programs meet the California Framework Curriculum Standards in History and Social Science for Grades 3 and 4.

Tour Information for 2016:

The California Citrus State Historic Park school tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays and are available January through April only. Tours start promptly at 10:00 AM and last about 2 hours. We ask that all groups arrive early and are ready to go at 10:00 AM. Our standard tours have 3 parts: Visitor Center Museum tour, grove tour, and citrus tasting. This is dependent on the group size and the season of the different varieties of citrus. We cannot accommodate more than 60 students for the tour or 70 people total (students and chaperones). Schools have the option of extending their visit by having a picnic lunch in the park. Covered picnic areas are available. (Lunches not provided.) The tours are provided by our docent volunteers who have an incredible amount of experience and knowledge relating to citrus and its historical significance and importance.

Home Schools:
The first Tuesday of each month (Jan 5, Feb 3, Mar 3, and Apr 7) will be reserved for home school visits.  California Citrus will provide tours and programming for multiple home school programs up to a maximum of 70 people (students and adults).  Programming will be more flexible to accommodate a broader age group and parent participation.
