Ft. Humboldt State Historic Park*

---Ulysses S. Grant, the future U.S. President and commander of all Union forces during the Civil War, was stationed here as Captain of Company F, 4th Infantry, in 1853-1854.  Grant, who had been drinking due to extreme boredom, was forced to resign from the Army due to the charge of drunkenness by a superior officer with whom Grant had many quarrels with. 
---During the Civil War itself, as California's troops headed to points east, this post was the focal point for numerous conflicts between settlers, volunteer militia, and Native American Hoopa, Wiyot, and Yurok.
