Carpentry Skills

Park Maintenance workers perform many diverse carpentry tasks in the construction and repair of buildings, exhibits, and a variety of other park structures. Carpentry training is conducted in three phases (Basic Carpentry, Carpentry Skills, and Advanced Carpentry Skills) which are consistent with performance expectations for California park maintenance classifications.

Basic Carpentry
Basic Carpentry provides entry level park maintenance workers with an introduction to construction and woodworking. Program content includes an introduction to wood products and common construction materials, wood frame construction, simple shop woodworking, material handling and storage, hand held tool use and care, wood preservation, glazing, and safety.

Department Participants: Job-required training for Park Maintenance Assistants and Services Assistants - Maintenance.
Job-related training for Park Maintenance Worker Is.
Non-Department Participants: Entry-level maintenance personnel. Cost: $800 for California Resident, $900 for Out-of-State Resident. (Cost includes registration, meals and lodging.)
Program Length: 36 hours

Intermediate Carpentry Skills
Intermediate Carpentry Skills is a transitional-level training program designed to meet the needs of the semi-skilled park maintenance worker. Program content includes an introduction to plan reading, the Uniform Building Code, care and uses of stationary power tools, wall and roof system framing, installing doors and windows and the installation of common roofing materials.

Department Participants: Job-required training for Park Maintenance Worker Is (unless proficiency can be demonstrated).
Job-related training for Park Maintenance Worker IIs.
Non-Department Participants: Semi-skilled maintenance personnel. Cost: $800 for California Resident, $900 for Out-of-State Resident. (Cost includes registration, meals and lodging.)
Program Length: 36 hours

Advanced Carpentry Skills
Advanced Carpentry Skills provides continuing instruction in carpentry topics for experienced park maintenance personnel. Program content includes instruction in building and safety regulations, project planning and sketching, material estimating, complex roof framing, stair building, finish carpentry and shop woodworking.

Department Participants: Job-required training for Park Maintenance Worker IIs who have completed the Carpentry Skills Program.
Job-related training for Park Maintenance Supervisors, Restoration Work Specialists, Park Maintenance Worker Is who have completed the Carpentry Skills Program.
Non-Department Participants: Skilled maintenance personnel. Cost: $800 for California Resident, $900 for Out-of-State Resident. (Cost includes registration, meals and lodging.)
